The only bishounen of the series, George de Sand is a French noble who believes in upholding the honor and dignity of his nation and family name at all costs.  He also has an undying loyalty to the Princess Maria Louise, although at the start of the series, it's uncertain as to whether he's as much in love with her as she is with him (this gets resolved by the end).  And while the series doesn't actually confirm it, it can probably be assumed that George's parents died at some point, as the young man is already the head of his family at the age of 20, going on 21.  Much like Quatre from Gundam Wing, George was raised to be very proper, and is a talented musician (he plays the piano in episode 13) as well as an excellent swordsman. When it comes to the other pilots, George can sometimes be a little aloof, but respects his fellow fighters as both opponents and at times, even comrades...sometimes referring to Chibodee, who he tends to work with on the occassion, as a "ruffian" in good humor.  George is assisted in his endeavors to win the tournament by his loyal butler Raymound Bishop, who was also his first fencing trainer.

Skills and Abilities
Of the five current Shuffle Alliance members, George is most likely the most skilled when it comes to strategy and mental abilities.  Controlling the Rose Bits is a difficult task, particularly when trying to perform the Roses Hurricane.  Bits and funnels are reserved for use by Newtypes in Universal Century, so it's not surprising either that in the game G Generation F, our knight was listed as a mid-level Newtype.

Background
As to how he became a Gundam Fighter, George had it rather rough.  After years of training, most likely, he entered the Neo-French trials tournament to compete for the chance to represent his nation.  His skills allowed him to make it all the way to the finals in Versailles, but it was there that an encounter with his rival, a vicious and selfish Gundam Fight named Jean-Pierre Mirabeau, caused one of the worst disasters in recent Neo-French history.  Standing with his back to the watching crowd so that Gundam Rose could not fire upon him, Mirabeau unleashed a barrage of missile at George, and would have had him beaten if the French King had not declared the match over.  His Majesty's decision was to allow George to represent Neo-France, for Mirabeau had proven that he was a dishonorable fighter and might shame the country.  Enraged by this, Mirabeau attacked the royal watch tower with his Gundam Mirage.  George made an attempt to stop the infuriated gundam fighter, but in grabbing hold of the other mecha, Rose accidentally caused it to deploy several missiles, many of which sailed into the stands and killed hundreds of innocent bystanders.  Horrified by this, George felt as though he were at fault; that the blood of those people had stained his hands.  Somehow, he managed to eventually conquer the mental block (possibly through ruthless training leading up the 13th Tournament), but the incident labeled the Versailles Disaster later came back to haunt him after his first encounter with the Devil Gundam.

Relationship Analysis...
...in regards to the other Shuffle members.

Domon Kasshu - George has a healthy respect for Domon's fighting abilities, but probably thinks of him as being a little too rash and blunt from time to time.  Like the other guys in the group, George was disappointed when Domon shunned Rain in the later episodes, and was more than pleased to see them together before the end.

Chibodee Crocket - Of all the Shuffle Alliance fighters, Chibodee is probably the closest thing to a character foil George has in terms of personality.  While George is refined and usually even tempered, Chibodee is hot tempered and takes to hitting on any good looking woman he comes across.  While George may enjoy a glass of champagne from time to time, Chibodee has been known for coming home to his crew drunk on more than one occassion.  Good friends on the battlefield and perhaps even at social gatherings (since one's weakness would be the other's strength), but these two would drive each other insane if they ever had to share a home for any reason!

Sai Sici - Hyper active and occassionally letcherous, Sai and George exist as comrades, but I couldn't see them sitting down for serious, get to know you type conversations.

Argo Gulskii - Only speaking when necessary and more compassionate than he lets on, Argo is the member of the group who is probably the most like George.  They could probably be good friends off the battlefield if given the chance.

...in regards to the girls.

Rain Mikamura - I'm one of those crazy G fans who thinks that if there were no Domon and no Maria Louise, George x Rain might be something that would actually click.  Both of them are sensitive individuals, deep down.  In addition, George is the knight in shining armor, always willing to put himself between a lady and danger, and Rain, while not always a damsel in distress because she can fend for herself, does require someone who will treat her like a real woman.  But since Domon finally did come around and get it through his head that he and Rain were destined to be, George and Rain could probably hit it off as close friends.  In many of the fanfics I've planned (and may or may not ever write), they could act as good friends, able to call one another when relationship issues came up with their own significant others.

Allenby Biazury - Again, I could see George being friends with the female in question, here, although that would be as far as it would go.  Allenby is a little too intense, personality-wise, to be anything more.  Besides, she needs either Domon or someone very much like him.

Princess Maria Louise - The canon pairing, and a definite match.  George is the honorable knight, and Maria is his princess.  But don't think for a moment that Maria is helpless!  While she isn't as strong as Rain or Allenby in terms of fighting strength, she can fend for herself and isn't afraid to put her life on the line to help her love interest.  Likewise, George would do anything for Maria Louise, and that includes dying.  It's always in the most dire of situations that thoughts of her are what drive George to do what may have previously seemed impossible... such as lifting the massive Grand Gundam clear of the ground!

Because he is the only major bishounen of G Gundam, I do often wonder how much George will be pegged for yaoi related art and fan fiction.  It's my hope that most will recognize the canon pairing of George x Maria Louise and leave the matter be, seeing as how it wouldn't really be in character for George to take another man as a lover (as it is, the guy is probably a virgin, anyway, and has enough trouble dealing with Maria).

The Name...
It may be possible that George's name was derived from French romance writer "George Sand", who was actually a female who lived during the 1800's with a male pen name in order to further her own writing career.  It does seem odd that he would be named after a woman, but it's possible that the staff was not aware of George Sand's true identity when they got the name.  Our Knight of Scarlet Rose's own name, however, actually means "George of Sand", or in a more long-winded sort of way, "George of the House of Sand."  (Hence this site's name.)

The name definition guide at www.kabalarians.com defines "George" as being -

"...a dual influence: at times you can be extremely happy, expressive, full of fun, and good-natured; yet at other times you find congenial association impossible, being controlled by self-pity, moods, and depression. If you could express only the constructive qualities and restrain the negative qualities of your nature, you would always be good company. These contrasting qualities make it difficult for people to understand you and can lead to friction in your personal life. You are deep, philosophical, and refined, but your extremely sensitive nature causes you to become depressed over any real or imagined slight. You feel and sense much more than you can fully understand, and could become psychic if you delved into the occult. The problem then would be controllable thoughts, feelings, and reactions. You find it difficult to be patient, practical, and systematic, preferring to act impulsively as the spirit moves you."
As George evolves throughout G Gundam, we find that often times, he can be a very well mannered, refined individual with a good head on his shoulders.  However, certain things can sway him to one extreme or another, and it's not because he was raised as a spoiled, royal brat.  Instead, we find that his morals can occassionally cause him to become unhinged at the sight of unjust acts being committed, or a woman being put in danger.  In addition, his dark past involving the Disaster of Versailles moves him to such despression and fear at one point that he cannot even pilot his own Gundam.  That much of the above description is true, as well as the line about becoming psychic, considering that if this were a UC series, George would most likely be a Newtype with his ability to control Bits.  We don't necessarily see George as "extremely happy, expressive and full of fun" at many points however, but one could suppose that it would be Maria Louise's job to bring those qualities out in him.  ;)
